A unique, collaborative furniture collection using hand forged elements in combination with traditional woodworking techniques. The hand carved details and lapped joinery help to unite this collection and emphasize its craft.

        When designing the Banyan Chair, I set out to develop a form that relied completely on the front legs for strength and support, leaving the back to remain open. The legs of the chair come together to form the body, much like the roots of the Banyan tree, giving the chair a non-traditional dynamic quality. Although the components are sharp and geometric, the movement of the chair is organic. The nature of this design meant that the joinery and material used had to be very strong; I used black walnut for the body and strong joinery techniques such as: mortise and tenons, bridal joints, and a sliding “T” joint. The feet, crafted from maple, are inspired by traditional Japanese joinery and serve as light accents to break up the darkness of the walnut. 

The objective of this projects was to create a uniquely designed chair inspired by nature, to try a more artistic approach to design. The project presented a unique opportunity for me to have full liberty with both form exploration and execution. This allowed me to push the limits of my craft and experiment with a woodworking technique unfamiliar to myself. 

Designed as a Free-standing, modular, sound diffuser, acoustacks are designed to adapt to any space they inhabit. Acoustacks incorporates several, purpose-driven, blocks that gives one more control over both the level and type of noise reduction considered appropriate for a given space.
